Facebook is now Meta. What does this mean?

The Facebook company is now called Meta. What? Meta? Why? I am as confused as anyone. But here’s what the firm is saying:

Speaking at ‘Connect 2021’, Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg explained this move is to move towards a future where we are all truly connected virtually, but in a 3D environment! I believe Mark has seen the writing on the wall and knows social media will be regulated soon. This is his attempt at diversifying his business and creating an actual 3D world where the Artificial Reality will become ‘Actual Reality’!

As per Zuckerberg’s Facebook post, “In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up.” While this sounds like the true realization of every science fiction novel, one must remember, we are in 2021 and we still can’t wear “smart glasses” due to the fear of privacy.

I’d love to watch Manchester United play at Old Trafford as a hologram! Mumbai to Manchester is a little far away you know. We need to understand though, the first step towards technological progress will always be via enterprise application and success. The internet itself was a US defense project that was then opened to corporates and then the general public.

I am excited for the Metaverse and truly believe, only Mark Zuckerberg has the will and resources to see it through. Over to you, Alphabet!
